The North Cliffs
The North Cliffs is a stretch of coastline along the North coast of West Cornwall. Set between Gwithian and Portreath, it is known for its towering cliffs, huge waves, and offshore winds. However, it is also a haven for wintering seabirds. Throughout the seasons, various species refuge here, nesting and breeding as part of their arduous journey. Every year, thousands of birds use this small section of coast as their temporary homes despite the challenges.
Seabird numbers have plummeted in the UK due to food scarcity and storms, causing exhaustion and hundreds of birds to wash up along the shores of Cornwall. The series depicts the recent harsh winters of Cornwall and its extreme weather, showing the species that stay and endure it. The book attempts to show the tough reality of life for these incredible birds, combining the brutal and unforgiving wave breaks with the soft, light plumages of the birds to create a unique balance. This is a story about the resilience of seabirds and the importance of their existence through an atmospheric tone.
